Speaking Monday, Maryland Democratic governor Martin O’Malley slammed New Jersey governor and potential Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie, saying prospects for a presidential run were “entertaining.”
Speaking on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Mr. O’Malley, a Democrat, said speculation of a Christie candidacy delights the Democratic Party, noting that Mr. Christie’s bid would be nothing more than “entertainment.”
Mr. O’Malley told a national television audience this morning that Mr. Christie would provide “tremendous entertainment value” if he runs for president, but will offer little in the way of “effective government.”
Mr. O’Malley’s comment comes as speculation of a Christie candidacy continues to mount. The New Jersey Republican has repeatedly downplayed such speculation, saying he remains focused on governing New Jersey. However, a report published over the weekend in the New York Times, notes aides close to Mr. Christie are considering whether the New Jersey Republican can mount an effective challenge. Mr. Christie likely has until the end of October to reach a decision.
Mr. O’Malley has sought to raise his national profile this year, taking on a leadership role in the Democratic Governors Association, where he makes frequent trips to Washington, D.C. The Maryland Democrat is set to be in North Carolina early next week raising money for the DGA.
