Minnesota congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said Wednesday that she agrees with a proposal to being impeachment proceedings against President Obama.
Asked if she agreed with Texas congressman Ron Paul — who has called for impeaching President Obama — Ms. Bachmann replied, “Well, I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you, I agree, I agree. Some people are really upset.”
Campaign spokesperson Alice Stewart said later, “She was not saying that she agrees that Obama should be impeached. She agreed with the man on what they were talking about before — that people are frustrated.”
The comment comes as Mr. Paul, a Republican presidential candidate, has hinted that the Republican-led House may consider impeachment proceedings against Mr. Obama, citing the recent killing of al-Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki who was killed by a CIA-operated drone earlier this month.
“I put responsibility on the president because this is obviously a step in the wrong direction,” Mr. Paul said in his statement earlier this week. “We have just totally disrespected the Constitution.”
Calls for impeaching President Obama has increased as the field of Republican presidential candidates have expressed concerns with the Obama administration’s decision to kill al-Awlaki. Speaking earlier this week, Mr. Obama defended the decision, citing a legal memo form the Department of Justice that builds the case for targeted killings of U.S. citizens connected to terrorism abroad.
Ms. Bachmann’s campaign has had a difficult week, following up on an even tougher month. On Tuesday, it was reported that longtime Republican pollster Ed Goeas and other aides were leaving her presidential campaign, the latest hurdle to face her campaign.
