Michele Bachmann wins Iowa City bean caucus

The State Column | Tuesday, January 03, 2012

Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann is in last place among the Republican presidential candidates according to The Des Moines Register poll released Saturday, but she’s the winner of an Iowa City “Coffee Bean Caucus” held Tuesday at the Hamburg Inn in Iowa City, The Des Moines Register reports.

Voters dropped coffee beans into containers labeled with each of the candidates names, and then votes were tallied in an informal fashion. Ms. Bachmann received as majority of the beans, garnering 28.8 percent of the Republican vote with a total of 3,970 beans were cast.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney finished in second place with 21.4 percent, followed by Texas congressman Ron Paul who finished with 18.2 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich who finished with 13.8 percent.

Texas Governor Rick Perry finished in fourth place, followed by former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman rounding out the bottom of the race in the “Coffee Bean Caucus” at the Hamburg Inn in Iowa City.

President Barack Obama was not surprisingly the leading vote getter in the Iowa City “Coffee Bean Caucus,” as he finished with 6,442 votes.

While informal, the Iowa City coffee bean voters selection of the Minnesota congresswoman out of all the candidates could be a sign that Ms. Bachmann’s prediction of doing well in the Iowa caucuses may actually come true.

The Minnesota congresswoman appeared in West Des Moines with Iowa congressman Steve King Tuesday morning, to sign Mr. King’s “Repeal ObamaCare” pledge, and made one last final appeal to Iowa voters as they head to the caucuses Tuesday to cast votes.

“We’ve seen candidate rise and we’ve seen candidates fall, and at the end of the day what people want is someone who is a true, core, consistent conservative who can articulate our profound, pro-growth message,” said Ms. Bachmann. “They want someone who will come in the footsteps of a Ronald Reagan or a Margaret Thatcher. I am the best candidate to follow in their image.”
