Mitch McConnell to Obama: We will vote on jobs bill

The State Column | Wednesday, October 05, 2011

Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that the U.S. Senate will vote on a proposed jobs bill, adding that he does not expect congressional lawmakers to support the measure.

“What the president has asked for is not parts of it, but the whole thing,” Mr. McConnell told reporters Tuesday. “He’s been critical of Congress for not giving him a vote. I think we should. I think he’s entitled to know where the Senate stands on his proposal in its entirety.”

The Kentucky Republican, who has expressed opposition to Mr. Obama’s jobs plan, said lawmakers would vote on the measure as part of an effort dispel support for the proposed plan.

Speaking Tuesday, Mr. Obama called on congressional lawmakers to pass his measure, saying the plan would increase jobs and lower the nation’ rate of unemployment.

“Pass this bill. If you want construction workers on the worksite, pass this bill. If you want teachers in the classroom, pass this bill. You want small business owners to hire new people, pass this bill. If you want veterans to get their fair share of opportunity that they helped create, pass this bill. If you want a tax break, pass this bill,” Mr. Obama told supporters.
