Mitt Romney leads big in latest poll

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney leads in the latest primary poll out of Utah.

A statewide poll places Mr. Romney well ahead of other potential Republican presidential candidates, including Jon Huntsman Jr. and Donald Trump. A Deseret News/KSL-TV poll found that 69 percent backed Mr. Romney, 14 percent support Mr. Huntsman and 5 percent favored Mr. Trump.

The poll is the latest to find Mr. Romney as the leading Republican candidate. It is also the first to pit Mr. Romney against Mr. Trump in a head-to-head matchup.

Mr Romney has maintained a relatively low profile in recent weeks. The Massachusetts Republican has expressed interest in seeking the 2012 Republican presidential nomination and he is expected to announce his candidacy in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Mr. Trump continues to grab headlines. The New York Republican has spent most of the month questioning President Obama’s citizenship, even hiring private investigators to examine Mr. Obama’s birth certificate in Hawaii.

The poll of 247 Utah residents was conducted Thursday by Dan Jones & Associates. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 6.3 percentage points.
