Mitt Romney’s campaign slams Deval Patrick after email request

The State Column | Friday, November 18, 2011

The Democratic National Committee requested that Mitt Romney turn over all emails from his time as the governor of Massachusetts Thursday. A Boston Globe article published Thursday exposed Romney and his staff for purchasing state-issued computers and erasing emails when he left office in 2007. The DNC released the following statement about the request: “Americans deserve to know whether the Romney administration deliberately sought to delete public records in anticipation of requests regarding Governor Romney’s record on a range of issues from abortion to health care and how he reached policy decision when in office.”

The DNC filed the request under the Massachusetts Public Records law and asked for emails from all of Romney’s staffers during his term as governor. The DNC appears to be searching for emails with specific keywords that show flaws in Romney’s record as governor. According to the text of the DNC’s letter, the committee is searching for terms such as “delete emails” and “destroy records.”

Mitt Romney’s campaign manager wasted no time in responding Thursday, attacking both the DNC and current Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick.

Matt Rhoades penned a letter to Patrick, which was released by the Romney campaign. In the letter, Rhoades wrote: “At a time when unemployment is at unacceptably high levels, both here in Massachusetts and around the country, the people of Massachusetts deserve to know that you are focused on alleviating joblessness — not running a dirty tricks shop for your friend, President Obama.”

“It is evident that your office has become an opposition research arm of the Obama reelection campaign,” Romney’s campaign manager added.

Rhoades asked for all email correspondence between Patrick and several of Obama’s advisers.
