President Barack Obama leads all GOP presidential candidates in Ohio, according to a new poll that was taken just before Tuesday’s pro-union vote to repeal Senate Bill 5, which was signed into law by Republican Gov. John Kasich and placed limits on collective bargaining rights.
The new Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey shows Obama leading former Mass Gov. Mitt Romney 50 – 41, outside of the margin of the error. Obama also leads businessman Herman Cain 51 – 39 and Texas Gov. Rick Perry 53 – 36.
Obama also leads all GOP candidates on favorability.Romney, who has done well in Ohio polling against Obama, is viewed favorably by 28 percent of Ohio voters, compared to 48 percent who see him negatively
In a statement published with the poll, PPP noted that those voters who came out to the polls on Tuesday are likely more Democratic, citing enthusiasm to vote down SB 5 and voice opposition to Gov. John Kasich, and that the likely voting bloc on election day in 2012 could look much different.
“The electorate next year probably won’t be as friendly to Democrats as the one that showed up in Ohio yesterday,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling in a release. “But after a tough 2010 there it looks like the party is re-energized and ready to come back out for Barack Obama in 2012.”
