Newt Gingrich heads to Atlanta

The State Column | Thursday, April 07, 2011

Republican Newt Gingrich will hold a fundraiser in metro Atlanta as he explores whether to run for president. Mr. Gingrich’s spokesman Rick Tyler said the fundraiser is set for April 13.

Mr. Gingrich’s Atlanta appearance is the first since the former House Speaker announced his intention to form a presidential exploratory committee. Mr. Gingrich came to Atlanta in March and announced he would test the political waters and begin fundraising for a potential run against President Barack Obama.

The former House Speaker has remained in the headlines as the House continues in its attempt to avoid a government shutdown. Mr. Gingrich, who oversaw a government shutdown in 1994, met with Republican leaders in late March. The Georgia Republican has repeatedly told Republicans to avoid shutting down the government.
