Pennsylvania Republican U.S. Senator Pat Toomey said Monday that he does not expect the Occupy Wall Street protest to last long.
“I’m not sure this movement is going to last if it doesn’t have some reasonably clear and cogent purpose and message and so far I haven’t seen that,” Mr. Toomey said during an interview on Pennsylvania’s WKOK news radio. “For the most part there just doesn’t seem to be a coherent message.”
The Pennsylvania Republican said he understand voter discontent with the current state of the economy, adding the protesters should target their concerns at the White House and President Obama.
“I understand a lot of discontent, but some of these folks I think it’s really not clear what they’re advocating for, what their solution is,” said Mr. Toomey. “Some of them are pretty radical: You see the occasional sign that says ‘Karl Marx was right.’”
Mr. Toomey’s comment comes as the Occupy Wall Street protest continues to spread. The Pennsylvania Republican was the center of attention during an Occupy Wall Street rally in Philadelphia over the weekend, where demonstrators marched from City Hall to Mr. Toomey’s Philadelphia office to “demand a recommendation that includes job creation; not tax cuts for the wealthy.”
Mr. Toomey is on the federal supercommittee aimed at reducing the nation’s debt by $1.2 trillion.
