Orrin Hatch finds support in Super PAC

The State Column | Thursday, September 22, 2011

Utah U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch seems to have found a good deal of support Thursday, announcing the formation of a political action committee.

Organizers of the Strong Utah PAC say they political action committee was formed with the intention of assisting Mr. Hatch, who is likely to face a tough bid for re-election.

“This super PAC has been organized to respond to the outside special interest groups such as FreedomWorks who are trying to buy the election with their handpicked candidates,” founder Kelly Casaday told the Desert News.

The PAC comes as Mr. Hatch, who has increased his focus on campaigning and fundraising in recent months, seems to have convinced Utah U.S. Jason Chaffetz to remain in the House. The Utah Republican congressman was rumored to have been considering challenging Mr. Hatch, however, Mr. Chaffetz said earlier this year that he will remain in the House.

Recent polls show support for Mr. Hatch climbing as the Utah Republican has sought to reassure his base. Earlier this month, the Utah U.S. senator received the endorsement of Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, a move that is likely to boost Mr. Hatch’s chances of re-election.

“Orrin is a committed public servant who always puts the people of Utah first,” Romney said in a statement. “America faces tremendous challenges. But I know that with Orrin Hatch at the helm of the Senate Finance Committee, we can chart a better course for our country built on strong pro-growth policies of low taxes, robust economic growth and much-needed jobs.”
