Former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue said Monday that he will back former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in the upcoming 2012 Republican presidential campaign.
“The idea of a Newt Gingrich candidacy is very intriguing,” Mr. Perdue said.
Georgia Republican governor Nathan Deal has already announced his intention to back Mr. Gingrich.
“Newt Gingrich can articulate that in a way that will appeal to a lot of people. If he runs, I think Newt Gingrich would make a great president. He will be able to count on my support,” Mr. Perdue said Monday.
The former House Speaker announced earlier this month that he will form a website aimed at exploring a potential run for president in 2012. Mr. Gingrich has said he plans to announce his intention before the summer.
