Polls: Mitt Romney leads as Ron Paul trails

The State Column | Monday, January 02, 2012

It seems former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney remains the favorite to win the Iowa caucus.

A pair of polls released Monday shows the Massachusetts Republican leading the field. An InsiderAdvantage poll released earlier Monday Mr. Romney leading the Republican field with 23 percent, followed by Texas Congressman Ron Paul at 22 percent, former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Rick Santorum at 18 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 16 percent, Texas Governor Rick Perry at 10 percent, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann at 6 percent, and Utah Governor Jon Huntsman at 2 percent.

The poll comes as a new American Research Group poll shows Mr. Romney leading with 22 percent, followed by Mr. Paul at 17 percent, Mr. Santorum at 16 percent, and Mr. Gingrich at 15 percent.

On the final full day of campaigning before Tuesday’s contest, Mr. Romney spent much of the day fending off the latest attack. The Massachusetts Republican campaigned in Iowa, battling back an increasingly popular bid by Mr. Santorum. Despite that pressure, Mr. Romney ignored his rivals and kept his focus on President Barack Obama, calling the 2012 election a battle for the “soul of America.”

“This is a contest about the economy and about the budget and about foreign affairs, but it’s also an election that is bigger than that,” said Mr. Romney.

The Massachusetts Republican was later joined by Senator John Thune, of South Dakota, and Representative Jason Chaffetz, of Utah.
