Poll: Romney, Gingrich, Paul sit in top tier in Arizona

The State Column | Friday, January 27, 2012

With the Arizona Republican primary scheduled for February 28th, very few voters are thinking about the Grand Canyon State. However, the latest poll of likely voters in the Arizona Republican primary reveals that Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul are top-tier candidates in Arizona.

Mr. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, earned 32 percent of the votes in the American Research Group poll. Mr. Gingrich, a former speaker of the House, also pulled in 32 percent of the votes. Mr. Paul, a congressman from Texas, garnered 12 percent of the votes. Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum almost made the top tier with 10 percent of the votes.

The Arizona poll, which was released Friday, also found that 12 percent of voters are undecided. A breakdown of the Arizona poll by gender reveals that Mr. Gingrich is a favorite among men and that Mr. Romney is a favorite among women. Only 9 percent of likely male voters in the Arizona Republican primary would vote for Mr. Santorum, the lowest percentage of all four Republican candidates.

A Republican presidential debate will be held in Arizona on February 22nd, but by that time there may only be two or three remaining candidates in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

Mr. Santorum and Mr. Paul are likely to take third and fourth places in the Florida Republican primary next Tuesday. Although Mr. Paul has the resources to continue running his campaign through the upcoming caucus elections, Mr. Santorum lacks the money to sustain his campaign unless Mr. Gingrich’s campaign implodes in the next several weeks.

American Research Group interviewed 600 likely voters in the Arizona Republican primary on January 25th and January 26th. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
