Kentucky Republican U.S. Senator Rand Paul and New York Democrat Chuck Schumer have reportedly reached a deal over appropriating $36 million in benefits for thousands of elderly and disabled refugees living in the U.S.
“This took longer than it should have, but we are glad to reach a bipartisan agreement to extend this assistance to disabled refugees,” Mr. Schumer said in a statement. “Now it is time for the House to act so these individuals don’t have to wait any longer.”
The agreement comes months after Mr. Paul put a hold on the proposal, citing concerns with how refugees were selected for the program. Mr. Schumer said that he would support a subcommittee hearing on the program and request an inspector general investigation of how two suspects connected to an alleged terror plot received refugee status.
