Congressman Dan Burton (R-IN-05) issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s unprecedented recess appointments:
“Again, the self avowed Constitutional scholar currently residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has acted in direct dereliction of his oath to the American people to protect and defend the American Constitution. Beginning with his recent appointment of Richard Cordray to the position of Director of the job killing Consumer Protection Bureau, the President of the United States has clearly exhibited a blatant disregard for the checks and balances established by our Constitution. To reinforce this sentiment, the President then appointed Sharon Block, Terence Flynn, Brian Hayes and Richard Griffin to the National Labor Relations Board, another organization that has functioned as a bludgeon to the American economy. This reckless action, now a veritable hallmark of this Administration goes a step further than his past unilateral actions, arrogantly defying even the sound legal advice of his own Justice Department. The President is not a king and should not be allowed to behave like one.
“The President’s actions are inexcusable and it is time that the Professor come to the full realization that our Constitution is not a suggestion. We can only hope that the courts will summarily repudiate this arrogant political maneuver. In addition, Congress must do everything and anything we can to stop this President from continuing to trample on the fundamental separations of power that were established by the Founding Fathers to explicitly prevent this sort of dictatorial behavior.”
