Oregon Rep. David Wu said issued a statement late Sunday, saying he will not resign in light of allegations made against him in regards to “unwanted sexual contact,” adding that he will not seek re-election in 2012.
The Oregon Democrat is facing calls for his resignation over a young woman’s reported accusation that she had an “unwanted sexual encounter” with the Democrat three weeks after his election victory in November.
When confronted, the Oregon Democrat acknowledged a sexual encounter to his senior aides but insisted it was consensual, the sources said.
“This is very serious, and I have absolutely no desire to bring unwanted publicity, attention or stress to a young woman and her family,” Mr. Wu said in a statement issued earlier this week.
Mr. Wu spent much of the weekend reportedly meeting with top congressional leaders, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
An aide to Ms. Pelosi declined comment, noting that the two Democrats met and spoke about the allegations leveled against the Oregon Democrat.
The incident, which was first reported by The Oregonian, involves a close family friend of Mr. Wu’s, who graduated from high school in 2010. The 18-yr. old girl registered to vote in California last August.
