Rep. Dennis Cardoza: Obama suffers from 'idea disease'

The State Column | Wednesday, December 14, 2011

U.S. Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-CA.) wrote a scathing critique of President Barack Obama in a lengthy blog post for The Hill Tuesday.

Mr. Cardoza, who will retire at the end of the term, said the president would serve better as a university professor and claimed that many Democrats would prefer Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, California Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley or New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Though he was extremely critical of the president, Mr. Cardoza claimed he still prefers Mr. Obama to the Republican presidential candidates, who he summed up as “goat rodeo clowns.”

The California Democrat has been critical of the Obama administration for a while, as he blamed the White House for their handling of the housing crisis which lead to rampant foreclosures throughout his congressional district of the Central Valley region of California between Fresno and Stockton.

“After observing President Obama for the last three years, it has become obvious to me that the president might prefer to be a university professor rather than do the job he holds today,” Mr. Cardoza stated in the blog post Tuesday.

“Let me be clear — I’m not trying to disparage professors. But anyone who wonders why the president is not crushing the weak Republican field only needs to examine how President Obama has behaved more like Professor Obama,” Mr. Cardoza added.

Mr. Obama, nor anyone from his White House staff had any comment on Mr. Cardoza’s assessment of the Obama administration.

The former co-chairman of the Democratic Blue House coalition has written several other op-ed articles in 2011 criticizing different aspects of the Obama administration. However, his blog post Tuesday was his most direct and hard hitting critique of the president.

He referred to Mr. Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and his early days in office with the message of “change” and a promise to help pull the U.S. out of the financial crisis created by the Bush administration. However, he said that the president pushed forward too many new initiatives and constantly ignored advice from Cabinet members and members of Congress.

“President Obama projected an arrogant ‘I’m right, you’re wrong’ demeanor that alienated many potential allies. Furthermore, the president concentrated power within the White House, leaving Cabinet members with no other option but to dutifully carry out policies with which they had limited input in crafting and might very well disagree,” the California Democrat said.

“I’ll still take Professor Obama over the ‘goat rodeo clowns’ the Republican field offers, but I fear the overall student body — American voters — will give him a failing grade next November if he doesn’t improve his performance ,” Mr. Cardoza added.
