Rep. Joe Walsh: I will punch my opponent in the face

The State Column | Thursday, November 03, 2011

Illinois Republican congressman Joe Walsh is capturing headlines again, saying Thursday that his campaign for re-election will not tolerate questions concerning his personal life.

“If he raises his voice and calls into question who I am as a father, I’ll punch him in the face, figuratively speaking,” Mr. Walsh told the Daily Herald.

The Illinois Republican, who has faced criticism for a number of controversial comments, has faced questions concerning nearly $100,000 in child-support. The Illinois Republican has downplayed concerns, saying he and his ex-wife have a “verbal agreement.” Meanwhile, Mr. Walsh’s legal team is preparing to argue his case later this month.

Mr. Walsh’s latest outburst comes as his Republican opponent in the 14th District, Rep. Randy Hultgren, has taken a poll to determine whether the Republican incumbent’s personal life may provide a path towards winning the party’s nomination in 2012.

Speaking Wednesday, Hultgren campaign spokesman Andrew Flach declined to release a script of the poll, adding that “as far as the language is concerned, we only tested on things that were already in the media. We didn’t break new ground.”
