Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick on the State of the Union Address

The State Column | Wednesday, January 25, 2012

Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

“I join the President this evening in his call for cooperation and pursuit of common sense solutions to the challenges facing our nation. Several of the proposals the President discussed in his State of the Union address have bipartisan support, and I remain hopeful that we are able to work together to provide relief to the American people.”

“However, this spirit of cooperation must exist as much in the Senate and the White House as it does in the House of Representatives. I have joined Republicans and Democrats in sending dozens of pro-growth job creation bills to the Senate only to have them pile up awaiting action. Compromise and cooperation are not a one way street.”

“One glaring omission from the President’s address was the fact that today marks 1,000 days since the Senate last passed a budget. Our first priority must be to establish a budgetary framework in which the federal government operates. Government can no longer rely on accounting gimmicks or empty promises. America deserves an honest budget, and I will continue to fight for an open and transparent government.”
