Tonight, President Barack Obama delivered his third nationally televised State of the Union Address in front of a Joint Session of the United States Congress. Representative Mike Pompeo (KS-04), a Member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, released the following statement in response:
“Last year in his state of the union address, the President promised to ‘win the future.’ However, throughout the year the President instead made constant reference to the evils of ‘corporate fat cat jet owners’ and worked diligently to try to divide Americans with age-old class warfare. A year later, we look back on yet another 12 months marked by persistently high joblessness, ever-increasing regulation and spending-fueled debt that spirals ever higher.
“Tonight, we heard the President renew his call for ‘fairness’ and big government solutions to our current economic woes. He also stated, ‘As long as I’m President, I will work with anyone in this chamber to build on this momentum. But I intend to fight obstruction with action…’ In reality, the House has been active all year passing pro-growth jobs bills, while the Democrat leaders in the Senate continue to obstruct every solution that has passed through the House.
“Additionally, President Obama said, ‘It’s time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts, and no copouts. An America built to last insists on responsibility from everybody.’ The problem is, on his watch he passed bailouts, provided handouts and failed to provide jobs and real results for Americans. His rhetoric doesn’t match reality.
“I agree with the President on one point. An America that is ‘built to last’ does not ‘win the future’ with leadership that bloats the government, ratchets up unsustainable spending and worsens our national debt.
“Kansans and Americans are fed up. As we move into a year where we will have a Presidential election, I have no doubt that the responsibility for the dismal economic decisions made over the past three years will be placed appropriately,” said Congressman Pompeo.
