Rep. Ron Paul on Colbert Report: Federal Reserve is a counterfeiter

The State Column | Tuesday, April 26, 2011

Texas Rep. Ron Paul appeared on the Colbert Report just hours before he is expected to announce the formation of a presidential exploratory committee.

The Texas Republican, and potential Republican presidential candidate, reiterated his pledge to eliminate the federal income tax and the Federal Reserve if elected president.

“The biggest counterfeiters in the world are the Federal Reserve,” Mr. Paul said. “Most Americans now think the Federal Reserve doesn’t do a very good job.”

The Texas Republican congressman has repeatedly called for the elimination of the Federal Reserve. Mr. Paul has also said he supports a return to the gold standard.

The appearance comes in the midst of reports of Mr. Paul’s plan to take the first step towards entering the 2012 Republican presidential campaign. Mr. Paul, who is in Iowa Tuesday, will announce his plans for an exploratory committee along with a number of endorsements.

That said, those close to Mr. Paul acknowledge that a Paul presidential campaign is far from a sure thing. Aides to close to Mr. Paul say is still considering whether he plans to enter the 2012 contest.
