Wisconsin Rep. Tammy Baldwin is calling on the Department of Justice to investigate the results of Wisconsin election, saying the revelation of nearly 8,000 uncounted ballots is raising questions.
The congresswoman’s call follows last Tuesday’s election, which pitted Justice David Prosser against assistant attorney general JoAnne Kloppenburg, appeared to end with Ms. Kloppenburg winning by less than 500 votes.
Less than forty-eight hours later, Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus announced, in a dramatic press conference, that she had failed to count 7,500 ballots.
Last week, Ms. Baldwin sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, requesting the Justice Department examine the mistake. Ms. Baldwin said many of her constituents had expressed concern about the election error.
“For our democracy to endure, we, the people, must have faith in its laws and system of justice, including faith that our elections for public office are fair and free from any manipulating or tampering,” wrote Ms. Baldwin.
Meanwhile, both Mr. Prosser and Ms. Kloppenburg are preparing teams for the inevitable recount. Both campaigns said earlier in the week that they are prepared to challenge the election results regardless of any additional developments.
