Rick Santorum looks for ‘huge surprise’ in N.H. primary

The State Column | Tuesday, January 10, 2012

The New Hampshire Republican Primary Election continues to seem like a race for second place behind front running candidate Mitt Romney, but former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum isn’t giving up.

Mr. Santorum plans to use all “24 hours” of the day of the New Hampshire primary election to continue to court voters. He made a last minute pitch to supporters during a rally in Manchester, New Hampshire Monday night, The Associated Press reports.

“We’re not asking much. Our founders gave their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor,” said Mr. Santorum Monday. “I’m asking you for 24 hours of effort to pull off a huge surprise here in New Hampshire to give us the boost to show that the momentum is continuing so we can go down to South Carolina, kick a little butt down in South Carolina, go down to Florida and keep kicking until we have a strong, principled conservative in the model of Ronald Reagan.”

The crowds at Mr. Santorum’s campaign events last week weren’t as welcoming as would be expected following his come from behind last minute second place finish in the Iowa caucus voting.

During an appearance at the College Convention 2012 at New England College in Concord, New Hampshire Thursday he was booed by a college crowd for his views on gay marriage.

He was also heckled by gay rights supporters at several other campaign appearances in New Hampshire last week.

Mr. Santorum’s schedule Tuesday will include visits to polling places, last minute media interviews and television appearances in hopes of convincing any undecided voters to vote for him. He has not run any television advertisements in New Hampshire, and finished the Public Polling Policy poll released Sunday in fifth place garnering 11 percent of the votes.

“Given the fact that we’re not running any media up here and that we’ve really only spent five days in the last month here, second place would be a dream come true,” said Mr. Santorum Monday.
