Former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Rick Santorum said Tuesday that a “culture” of abortion is contributing to problems facing the Social Security program.
In his latest trip to New Hampshire, Mr. Santorum said the Social Security system would be in much better shape if there were fewer abortions. The Pennsylvania Republican made the comment during an interview with WESZ-AM radio in Laconia, New Hampshire.
Mr. Santorum’s comment comes as the Republican considers a bid for the 2012 presidential election. Mr. Santorum has traveled to a number of early primary states in recent months, including Iowa and New Hampshire.
The former Republican U.S. Senator said Social Security is facing problems due to a lack of people able to pay in and support retirees. He noted that culture, coupled with policies that do not support families, deny America what it needs – more people.
“We have seven children, so we’re doing our part to fund the Social Security system,” Mr. Santourm added.
The former senator has long been an outspoken opponent of abortion.
In the same interview, Mr. Santorum questioned President Obama’s decision to intervene in Libya. The former senator questioned whether an intervention could lead to an increase in radical Islam.
