Rick Santorum: 'They devour you. They destroy you. They consume you'

The State Column | Friday, February 03, 2012

Speaking to a group of supporters on Thursday, Republican presidential candidate and former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Rick Santorum warned against a second term for President Obama, invoking a bit of mythology.

“Go back and read what the sirens did once you arrived on that island,” Mr. Santorum warned students at Colorado Christian University this week. “They devour you. They destroy you. They consume you.”

“Ladies and gentleman we cannot listen to the siren song,” the Pennsylvania Republican added. “We cannot listen to President Obama and we can’t listen to those in our party who want to be just a little bit less than what the Democrats and the left is doing to our country.”

Mr. Santorum, who currently trails his Republican counterparts in Nevada and Maine, has struggled to maintain momentum in recent weeks. The Pennsylvania Republican secured a major victory in the Iowa caucus in early January, before losing to Mitt Romney — the former Massachusetts governor — in the New Hampshire primary.

Still, Mr. Santorum, who took third place in Florida’s primary, has vowed to remain in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, citing his commitment to increasing the Republican Party’s focus on social issues, including abortion rights and his opposition to gay marriage.

Mr. Santorum also constantly warns that neither Mr. Romney nor Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, would be an effective challenger to President Obama.

“Barack Obama, in a debate or in this election, is going to destroy Mitt Romney on the issue of health care,” Mr. Santorum told a crowd in Woodland Park earlier this week.

As for Mr. Gingrich, Mr. Santorum says the former House speaker is “way too erratic.”
