Rick Synder: Mitt Romney is a rising star in Michigan

Michigan Republican Governor Rick Snyder continued his support for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney on Monday, saying he remains confident in Mr. Romney’s chances of securing a victory in Michigan.

Speaking on Fox News, the Michigan Republican, who endorsed Mr. Romney earlier this month, said that he expects to see Mr. Romney’s support reflected in the polls as the primary approaches.

“Now, Michigan is in the spotlight and I think we’re going to see a real response as people have a chance to hear from Gov. Romney more,” Mr. Snyder said. “There’ll be a lot of TV advertising, there’s appearances and people are talking about it. So he’s going to come up strongly in the polls, I believe.”

Asked whether a loss in Michigan could hurt Mr. Romney’s chances of securing the Republican nomination, Mr. Snyder said it was unlikely.

“I don’t know if I’d say that,” the Michigan governor said. “If you look at the whole process, it’s going to take a while for any candidate the way that the delegates are being distributed and such.”

Mr. Synder’s comment comes as polls show Mr. Romney tied with former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, who has surged to the lead of the Republican field in recent weeks. Polls released last week show Mr. Santorum barely ahead of Mr. Romney in the state of Michigan, Mr. Romney’s home state.

The latest poll results have the Romney campaign on edge, as speculation over which candidate will have the necessary support ahead of the Republican Convention later this year continues to mount.
