Ron Paul in Washington State as polls show him trailing

The State Column | Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Texas Republican Congressman Ron Paul is headed to the state of Washington, where he will continue his campaign even as polls show him trailing his Republican counterparts.

Mr. Paul will travel to Vancouver, Seattle, and Richland, where he will meet with supporters in a series of rallies set to take place ahead of the state’s March primary.

The Texas Republican is the latest Republican presidential candidate to travel to the state. Former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Rick Santorum campaigned in Olympia and Tacoma on Monday and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is set to travel to Seattle area on March 1. Mr. Romney’s campaign said he also may make other appearances in the state before the caucuses.

Mr. Paul’s trip to the Evergreen state comes as series of polls show the Texas congressman trailing in the race for the Republican nomination.

Speaking to group of supporters on Wednesday, Mr. Paul said he remains confident of his chances of securing a majority of support among the party’s delegates. The Texas Republican also slammed President Obama’s budget proposal, criticizing White House projections that show the nation’s deficit set to increase.

“This latest $1 trillion deficit plan is a far cry from the promises President Obama made upon taking office, when he promised he would ‘cut the federal deficit in half’ by the end of his first term. In reality, the President has only increased the deficit he inherited by billions every year he’s been in office,” said Mr. Paul.
