Ron Paul wins first ever Students for Liberty straw poll

The State Column | Monday, February 20, 2012

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul won the first ever Students for Liberty straw poll Sunday, according to a tweet from @sfliberty. Mr. Paul pulled in 71 percent of the votes in the Students for Liberty straw poll.

Mr. Paul also won two Georgia straw polls over the weekend. The Texas congressman was victorious in a Gwinnett County Republican Party straw poll and a DeKalb County straw poll.

According to the organization’s website, Students for Liberty is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to “provide a student-driven forum of support for students and student organizations dedicated to liberty.”

Mr. Paul, who is considered the champion of Libertarian principles by many of his supporters, is extremely popular among youth voters. In fact, the former Air Force surgeon has won the youth vote in multiple Republican presidential elections in 2012.

Mr. Paul is prepping for Super Tuesday and elections in Arizona, Michigan and Washington State by trying to raise $2 million by the end of the day on Monday. The “No One But Paul” money bomb has raised more than $1.7 million as of 2:15pm EDT.

In an email to supporters Monday, Mr. Paul discussed the pressure on his campaign to win delegates in the upcoming elections. The Texas congressman slammed his fellow “establishment” candidates for going “up and down in the polls.”

“They have the establishment on their side to help them turn out the vote, and with ten states on the line, I want to make sure my campaign can respond with every resource necessary to both accumulate votes and secure critical delegate spots in as many states as possible,” Mr. Paul wrote.

The Students for Liberty straw poll was held at the fifth annual International Students for Liberty Conference, which took place in Washington D.C. from February 17th through February 19th.
