Same-Sex civil unions supporters ‘optimistic’ in Hawaii

The State Column | Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Supporters of same-sex civil unions say they are “optimistic” about a bill passing in the state during the upcoming legislative session.

With Democratic Governor Neil Abercrombie expected to support the proposal, it is simply a matter of Hawaii state lawmakers passing a bill.

Hawaii’s KITV noted that “several lawmakers who oppose civil unions refused to be interviewed because they expect the controversial bill to pass the legislature easily this year perhaps in the first few days of the 2011 session. ”

The move comes as state lawmakers passed a bill in the last hours of the 2010 legislative session. Hawaii Republican governor Linda Lingle vetoed the measure, ending any chance of the measure passing.

With the state Legislature set to reconvene in the coming week, supporters of the measure are ramping up their effort to push for support of the measure.
