A same-sex marriage bill has hit a snag in Maryland.
The same-sex marriage proposal is in jeopardy after several delegates said Tuesday that they are no longer certain they support it. The move comes as state lawmakers said they expected to have the necessary votes for passage.
The snag comes the measure easily passed the Maryland state Senate. A key Maryland House committee on Tuesday, which was considering the bill, saw two of the bill’s co-sponsors staged a walkout rather than vote in favor of it.
Maryland House leaders said they were stunned by the turn of events.
Del. Tiffany T. Alston (D-Prince George’s) said in an interview that she needed more time “to think and to pray” about what she considers a “deeply personal issue for myself and my constituents.”
Meanwhile, Maryland Republicans criticized Democrats, saying Democratic leaders were making special accommodations for the controversial proposal.
Should the pass the House, Maryland Democratic governor Martin O’Malley, who has expressed support for the measure, is expected to sign it into law.
