Sarah Palin moving to Arizona for U.S. Senate bid in 2012?

The State Column | Sunday, May 22, 2011

It seems former Alaska governor Sarah Palin is headed south and it could include a potential bid for U.S. Senate.

The former Alaska governor has reportedly bought a mult-million dollar home in Scottsdale, Arizona, raising speculation that she may move to the state in order to seek the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Jon Kyl. Mr. Kyl announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election to the seat, opening up a race between potential contenders.

Rumors of a Palin move to the state currently represented by the man who made Ms. Palin a national figure have been in the works for months.

Ms. Palin would join her daughter Bristol, who bought a house in the state earlier this year.

The move for Ms. Palin comes as the former Alaska governor has floated the possibility of a presidential campaign in recent months. Ms. Palin has yet to visit early primary states or begin hiring staff for key campaign operations, a possible indication that she will bypass the 2012 Republican presidential campaign.

A Palin for U.S. Senate bid would certainly make her the front-runner for the position. Arizona U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake is the only candidate thus far to officially announce. U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who remains hospitalized due to an attempted assassination, has been floated as a possible contender, however, it remains unclear whether she has interest in the seat.

A recent poll showed Ms. Palin and Ms. Giffords as the leading candidates for the seat.
