Sarah Palin offers thoughts on raising the debt ceiling

The State Column | Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin offered her thoughts on raising the nation’s debt ceiling, writing in a Facebook post that President Obama has failed to lead.

“This is the same president who ignored his own debt commission’s recommendations and demonized the voices of fiscal sanity who proposed responsible plans to reform our entitlement programs and rein in our dangerous debt trajectory,” Ms. Palin wrote in a Facebook post over the weekend.

“This is the same president who wants to slam Americans with tax hikes to cover his reckless spending, but has threatened to veto a bill proposing a balanced budget amendment,” the former Alaska governor added.

The former Alaska governor slammed President Obama, saying his administration has failed to put forward a plan for reducing the nation’s deficit, noting that she supports House Speaker John Boehner’s plan.

“This is the same president who hasn’t put forward a responsible plan himself, but has rejected reasonable proposals that would tackle our debt,” Ms. Palin noted

The comment comes as Ms. Palin continues to consider entering the 2012 race for the Republican presidential nomination and as polls show her trailing former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Ms. Palin has said she will announce her plans in the coming weeks.

Ms. Palin continued her rhetoric Tuesday, appearing on Fox News and telling supporters that Mr. Obama is using “scare tactics.”

“Scaring the American people is exactly what President Obama is doing in that bizarre speech he gave last night,” Ms. Palin said. “He’s getting pretty good at this fear mongering.”

With less than a week before the nation’s debt limit expires, Congressional lawmakers continued to debate raising the nation’s debt ceiling. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he will bring to vote a measure aimed at raising the debt limit and reducing spending by nearly $2 trillion. Mr. Obama has endorsed the measure.
