Sen. Bob Corker: Debt deal likely this week

The State Column | Thursday, July 07, 2011

Tennessee U.S. Senator Bob Corker said Thursday he thinks House Republicans and President Obama will reach an agreement over the weekend on raising the nation’s debt limit

“My sense is we’ll know one way or another whether there will be “a grand bargain” by this weekend,” Mr. Corker said.

“I think the world and all of us will know something very shortly,” Corker said. “They’ll either have a ‘grand bargain’ or they won’t.”

The Tennessee Republican said House Speaker John Boehner expressed optimism over reaching a deal by Sunday when lawmakers will travel to the White House for a second meeting.

“I get the sense that the speaker believes that everything’s on the table,” Mr. Corker added.

With an August 2 deadline quickly approaching, Mr. Obama has ramped up talks aimed at reaching a consensus on raising the nation’s debt limit. The president has invited back members of Congress for an additional meeting on Sunday, where a final deal is expected to be presented.

The meeting comes as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warned Congress against taking negotiations down to the wire, telling members to reach a deal by July 22 in order to provide ample time for crating passing a measure raising the debt limit.
