Sen. Claire McCaskill leads in early poll

The State Column | Tuesday, March 08, 2011

Missouri U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill is leading in an early poll showing the Missouri Democrat well positioned for the upcoming 2012 U.S. Senate race.

The poll, released by Public Policy Polling, is the second poll of the 2012 cycle and it shows Ms. McCaskill just ahead of her potential Republican candidates.

Ms. McCaskill led former announced candidates State Treasurer Sarah Steelman 45 percent to 42 percent, and former Matt Blunt Chief of Staff Ed Martin, 46 percent to 40 percent., according to PPP’s poll taken this weekend.

“This continues to look like a 50/50 race,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “Missouri had a rare lopsided Senate election last year but in 2012 it looks like it will return to being one of the closest states in the country.”

The Missouri Democrat is facing a tough race in 2012, with Republicans taking aim at a seat they see as potentially vulnerable.
