West Virginia U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller is stepping into the debate over the future of nuclear energy in America.
The West Virginia Democrat entered the debate Thursday noting “we don’t make [decisions] out of emotion; we don’t make them because of a catastrophe in another country. So before we make the decision, let’s be thoughtful about it.”
The comment comes as Japanese and nuclear officials continue to address the nuclear calamity unfolding on the coast of Japan. U.S. officials requested more information on radiation levels, while assuring that radiation levels hitting the U.S. are relatively safe.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission chairman Gregory Jaczko said the United States was working to provide ideas and possibly equipment to help Japan.
