Oregon U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley said Wednesday that the United States should “get off of foreign oil by 2030.”
“America’s addiction to foreign oil is a severe threat,” Mr. Merkley said. “By continuing to place our energy security in the hands of nations that don’t have our best interests in mind, we leave American families and businesses vulnerable to spikes in gas prices.”
The Oregon Democrat’s comment comes as President Obama addressed a crowd at Georgetown, delivering a speech aimed at addressing the nation’s energy policy.
Mr. Obama’s energy policy calls for the President and the National Energy Security Council developing a national oil independence plan that would include a timetable for achieving oil independence.
