Sen. Kelly Ayotte endorses Mitt Romney

The State Column | Monday, November 21, 2011

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney received a coveted endorsement Sunday from New Hampshire Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte. Ayotte announced her support for Romney at a rally in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Ayotte believes Romney is the GOP’s best chance to defeat President Barack Obama. “I have been impressed by the amount of time Mitt Romney has spent in New Hampshire, holding open town hall meetings, answering the tough questions and listening to voters,” Ayotte said in a Romney campaign press release. Ayotte’s popularity in New Hampshire should help Romney, who skipped a conservative Christian forum in Iowa Sunday where several of his competitors attended and spoke about their religious faith and how it shapes their view of politics.

“Mitt Romney has proven through his experience as a successful businessman, effective governor, and by his excellent presidential debate performances that he is best prepared to lead our country and ensure Barack Obama is a one-term president,” Ayotte said.

Romney used the Nashua rally to attack Obama’s lack of involvement in the debt supercommittee’s negotiations. The former Massachusetts governor has mostly avoided talking about the supercommittee and what kind of deal he supports, but Sunday he expressed his frustration with Obama’s lack of leadership on the issue.

“He’s done nothing,” Romney said of Barack Obama at the Nashua rally. “It is another example of failed leadership. He has not taken personal responsibility to get the supercommittee to find ways to balance the budget and cut spending, Romney added.

In addition to Ayotte, former New Hampshire Republicans Judd Gregg and John H. Sununu have also endorsed Romney for the 2012 election.
