Sen. Mike Lee expresses concerns over immigration reform waiver

The State Column | Thursday, March 24, 2011

Utah U.S. Senator Mike Lee is voicing concern that Utah may fail to receive an immigration waiver.

“No, I don’t believe there is any possibility that the state is going to get any kind of a waiver,” Mr. Lee said earlie this week.

“I know of no provision of federal law that suggests such a waiver could even be granted. Nor do I know of any political inclination in Washington to allow that to happen.”

The comment comes as Utah governor Gary Herbert signed a controversial immigration reform measure into law. Mr. Lee had expressed support for the measure. Mr. Lee says he remains concerned that the state will not receive the necessary waiver required in order for the law to take effect.

The immigration bill contained a guest-worker program for undocumented workers who obtain a job in the state.
