Sen. Orrin Hatch directs millionaires to pay more

The State Column | Monday, April 25, 2011

Utah U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch said Monday he would support allowing millionaires to pay increased taxes.

“While we may disagree on the need for tax increases, I appreciate the millionaires’ philanthropic desire to share more of their wealth with the federal government, and I want to make sure that you are aware of the opportunities to fulfill this noble aspiration,” Mr. Hatch wrote in response to a letter sent to President Obama.

A group of millionaires has signed an open letter this week, telling the president they are willing to pay more in taxes as the nation continues to grapple with an increasingly complicated budget deficit.

The Utah Republican, who is likely to face a challenge from Tea Party Republicans when he runs for re-election in 2012, has repeatedly opposed raising taxes on those making more than $250,000.
