Sen. Pat Toomey continues push for balanced budget

The State Column | Friday, April 01, 2011

Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Pat Toomey continues his push for a balanced budget, pushing Democrats to adopt a measure aimed at cutting nearly $70 billion from the federal budget.

Mr. Toomey’s push for spending cuts come as the Pennsylvania Republican introduced legislation Thursday that would create a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.

“I think it speaks volumes about the fact that the Republicans are united under the idea that we’ve got to get spending under control,” Mr. Toomey said.

The constitutional amendment follows Mr. Toomey’s earlier statement in which the Pennsylvania Republican said he will not support a seventh continuing resolution, instead saying Democrats and Republicans will have to reach a deal on federal spending.

Both Democrats and Republicans seemed to reach agreement early Thursday, with House Speaker John Boehner attempting to persuade House Tea Party members to support $33 billion in cuts. Both the White House and House Democrats signaled support for the proposal Thursday.
