Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Pat Toomey said Monday that he will not vote in favor of raising the national debt ceiling, a move that could increase pressure on congressional Democrats and the White House in the coming week.
Mr. Toomey did not rule out voting in favor of the measure, but added that a compromise will have to be struck before he will support a measure.
“It’s gonna take two things,” Mr. Toomey said Monday. “Real cuts in spending now and structural process reform that allows us to stop continuing this problem.”
“A balanced budget amendment so the government lives within its means, statuatory spending caps so that we could immediately impose some limits on how much we spend,” Mr. Toomey added.
The debate over extending the federal debt ceiling comes as Congress continues to debate a federal budget. Congressional lawmakers have voted in favor of continuing resolutions, while negotiations continues. Republicans have slammed the White House, saying the administration is failing to assist in reaching a compromise.
