Oregon U.S. Senator Ron Wyden underwent surgery for a previously announced cancer on Sunday.
The Democratic U.S. Senator, who spent the week taking aim at President Obama’s unemployment and tax cut extension, underwent surgery for prostate cancer.
His staff quoted the surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore as saying Monday that “everything went perfect. The patient is recovering well.”
Mr. Wyden is expected to spend the week recovering at his home in Washington, D.C. Mr. Wyden said last week that the cancer was discovered in November during a physical.
The Oregon Democrat spent the weekend voting in favor of repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Mr. Wyden voted in favor of repeal. The Democrat was in the midst of pushing for passage of the DREAM Act, a measure that would grant illegal students a path towards citizenship.
The measure failed to muster the necessary votes for passage, a reality that will likely end any chance of its passage before the adjournment of the 111th Congress.
