Sen. Saxby Chambliss: Gang of Six is in no hurry

The State Column | Monday, May 16, 2011

Georgia U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss said Monday that the group of six U.S. Senators, charged with crafting a fiscal path forward for the United States, is in no hurry to produce a plan.

“What we’ve said from day one is that if we’re able to reach an agreement that it’s going to be the right kind of agreement versus an agreement that approaches a deadline of some sort. So, we’ve got our head down. We’re still talking through things but we’re not there yet,” Mr. Chambliss said.

The group, which consists of 3 Democrats and 3 Republicans, has been in the works for months. Among those joining Mr. Chambliss include Virginia U.S. Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat. Mr. Chambliss says cutting the 14-trillion dollar deficit is the most important issue he has seen in his 17 years in Congress.

The Georgia Republican said the Gang of Six have remained in close contact with a separate group under the direction of Vice President Joe Biden.
