Stephen Colbert addresses rumors, returns to show

The State Column | Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Comedy Central star Stephen Colbert returned to his show “The Colbert Report” Monday, after abruptly canceling the show for two days last week to be with his ailing mother.

“I can understand why the machinery of this great nation ground to a halt last week when you were denied this,” said Mr. Cobert, jokingly pointing to himself. “Now I’m sure you felt the same way I do when I’m in room with no mirrors.”

Comedy Central originally described Mr. Colbert’s absence as being due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

“Colbert Report” viewers and the media speculated that there Mr. Colbert’s absence was a sign that he was seriously considering launching a run for president. Over the last two months, Mr. Colbert has been a constant presence in the Republican primary race, making appearances with former candidate Herman Cain, and making a mockery of Super PACs with his own Super PAC “Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow.”

During his absence from show, fans of Mr. Colbert wrote him letters in an effort to console him regarding the situation with his mother.

“My family and I would like to thank everyone who has offered their thoughts and prayers. We are grateful and touched by your concern,” tweeted Mr. Colbert last week.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, is scheduled to appear on Mr. Colbert’s show Wednesday.

Recently Ms. Pelosi shot an ad entitled “Stop Colbert” further poking fun at his Super PAC, but also in an effort to bring awareness to the influence that Super PACs are having on the Republican primary race.
