Stephen Colbert PAC to South Carolina: ‘Vote for Herman Cain’

The State Column | Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Comedy Central star Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC has a new campaign message for his mock presidential candidacy, “Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow” wants South Carolina voters to vote for pizza magnate Herman Cain on Saturday.

After learning that a Public Polling Policy poll had him garnering more support in South Carolina than former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Mr. Colbert announced jokingly that he was forming an “exploratory committee” for a presidential campaign in South Carolina on his show “Colbert Report” last week.

Mr. Colbert’s Super PAC is mocking the efforts of the Republican candidates’ Super PACs by releasing ads that reflect those released by Super PACs that support Republican candidates Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

Over the weekend “Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow” released an ad attacking Mr. Romney, labeling him “Mitt the Ripper.” The ad pokes fun at a comment that Mr. Romney made earlier along the campaign trail where he said “corporations are people.”

Mr. Colbert has continued to poke fun at that comment, even proposing it as a ballot referendum to the South Carolina Republican party.

The latest ad advocates for Mr. Cain, who suspended his presidential campaign in early December amid several allegations of sexual impunity.

The former Godsfather Pizza Executive will be on the ballot Saturday in the South Carolina Republican primary election, although it is highly unlikely that he gets any votes considering he’s not even in the race.

The ad released Tuesday though by Mr. Colbert’s Super PAC, essentially pokes fun at the relative anonymity of funding to Super PACs enabling their ads to virtually say anything they want to, considering there’s no message from the actual candidate “approving” the message in the ad.

Mr. Colbert’s ad is completely humorous though, and features an announcer telling viewers to vote for Mr. Cain, while arrows on the screen actually point to Mr. Colbert himself whenever a reference to the pizza magnate is made.

“A vote for Herman Cain is a vote for America,” said the announcer in the ad. “He’s such a Washington outsider, he’s not even running for president. Send them a message, on January 21st vote for Herman Cain.”

Mr. Cain himself has recently announced that he will make an unconventional endorsement on Thursday, two days ahead of the South Carolina Republican primary election.
