Former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard today endorsed Andrei Cherny for Congress, explaining that Cherny is the best candidate to fight for Arizona’s middle class families.
“Andrei Cherny was a top prosecutor, and put some of Arizona’s most despicable corporate crooks and mortgage fraud artists behind bars,” Goddard said. “He’s tough, and I know he’ll bring the same tenacity he had in the courtroom to Washington to take on a system that is rigged against the middle class. Andrei has my full support, and sending him to Congress to fight for us is one of my top priorities in 2012.”
Cherny served as an assistant attorney general under Goddard from 2006 to 2009.
Goddard also praised Cherny’s work with Elizabeth Warren and other progressive reformers to take on the Wall Street lobbyists and begin the push for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
“Too many politicians tinker around the edges, and don’t fight for real change,” Goddard said. “Andrei has created real change from the outside — just imagine what he can do from the floor of the House of Representatives.”
As attorney general, Goddard built an unprecedented record of successful criminal prosecutions and civil settlements across a wide range of cases that include consumer protection and fighting mortgage fraud. Phoenix voters elected him four consecutive times to serve as the city’s mayor, and he is the former president of the National League of Cities.
Both Goddard and Cherny served as officers in the United States Navy reserve.
“I am proud to have the support of such a strong Arizona leader,” said Cherny. “Terry Goddard gave me the opportunity to serve the public in the courtroom, and I appreciate his help to allow me to serve once again.”
