Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett ordered all Pennsylvania flags in the Capitol Complex and at commonwealth facilities statewide to fly at half staff in honor of the memory of Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno, according to a media release from Mr. Corbett’s office.

Mr. Paterno passed away at the age of 85 Sunday. “His place in our state’s history is secure,” Mr. Corbett said in a statement Sunday.

“His legacy as the winningest coach in major college football and his generosity to Penn State as an institution and to his players, stand as monuments to his life,” Mr. Corbett said.

“As both man and coach, Joe Paterno confronted adversities, both past and present, with grace and forbearance,” the Pennsylvania Republican added.

Other Pennsylvania officials also commented on Mr. Paterno’s death. “His enormous role in building Penn State into the institution it has become will never be forgotten,” Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) said in a statement Sunday.

Mr. Corbett has ordered that all Pennsylvania flags fly at half staff through sunset on Thursday, January 2th. Mr. Corbett has also invited all Pennsylvanians to join in this tribute to college football’s winningest coach.
