U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, is a fan of New York Knicks’ star point guard Jeremy Lin and the “#Linsanity” craze that has taken over the sports world recently.
“Jeremy Lin does it again. Is there anything this guy can’t do? Six in a row for the @nyknicks! #Linsanity,” tweeted Mr. Schumer on Wednesday.
Mr. Lin is the New York Knicks’ star guard who was waived by the Golden State Warriors and signed by the Knicks in December. His stardom came out of nowhere, as he was largely off the radar of most basketball fans prior to helping the Knicks win six straight games.
“I definitely can’t say I would have expected to come in and do this in one week,” said Mr. Lin in a recent interview with the New York Daily News.
Mr. Schumer is one of many politicians that cheers for their favorite sports teams via Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other social media and Internet outlets.
“Jeremy Lin is NY’s next star. What a game last night! #Linsanity,” tweeted Mr. Schumer on Saturday, following a 38 point game for Mr. Lin against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.
The New York Knicks have begun using the phrase “Lin-Sanity” to promote the team, and recently signed Mr. Lin to an $800,000 contract for the remainder of the season.
The Knicks have seen a 3,000 percent increase in traffic and sales to their online store ever since Mr. Lin started dominating games, USA Today reports.
Mr. Schumer has been one of the more active members of Congress with his Twitter account.
He and the majority of New Yorkers have embraced the story of “Lin-sanity,” as a fan of the Harvard grad who was undrafted out of college and has now achieved stardom with the Knicks.
President Barack Obama is reportedly a fan of Mr. Lin as well. White House spokesman Jay Carney recently told reporters that the president was “very impressed” with the Knicks’ point guard.
