Wisconsin recall efforts begin at midnight

The State Column | Monday, November 14, 2011

Midnight will mark the beginning of recall efforts against Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch.

United Wisconsin, the political action committee leading the recall effort, announced its’ plans to file the official recall petitions at 12:01 on its’ website today.

“We are going to be filing online (with the state) just after midnight that will allow us to start collecting the signatures,” said Meagan Mahaffey, executive director of United Wisconsin in a statement to the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.

“There are some midnight collection events around the state. People are ready to go and want to start as soon as possible. There’s a lot of excitement about it.”

The Wisconsin state republican party is combatting the recall efforts with its own online “recall
integrity center,” in an effort to build evidence of fraud by state democrats. If recalled, Walker will have a brief period to fight the recall by challenging the authenticity of signatures.

Possible Democratic candidates for the recall election include former U.S. Rep. Dave Obey, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, state Sen. Jon Erpenbach of Middleton, and former Dane County executive Kathleen Falk.

United Wisonsin will make their paper filing with the Wisonsin state Government Accountability board Tuesday morning.
